Women, Democracy and the Media

The first three days of December 2014 the Conference ‘Women, Democracy and the Media: Political Participation and Freedom of Expression’ took place at Hôtel Belvédère Fourati, Tunis, Tunisia. The conference was arranged by some of us at the Department of Journalism and Media Studies Oslo and Akershus University College in cooperation with CAWTAR (Centre of Arab Women for training and research). It was a highly inspiring meeting between journalists and researchers from Tunisia, Turkey, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Egypt and Norway discussing issues connected to the following topics:

1. Gender, politics and religion in conflict coverage

2. Women who dare to speak out: vulnerability, harassment, strategies and remedies

3. Female politicians and media coverage in democratic processes

4. Trends in media coverage of women in time of conflicts, crises and wars – best and worst cases.
